Hampden Park in Glasgow the national stadium for football in Scotland has such a system installed by LS Systems and was the first in the UK to benefit from the latest in-pitch long throw sprinklers. The national stadium’s previous system was in need of an upgrade and a new pitch infrastructure was to be built with an automatic irrigation system that could water all the pitch in just six minutes and that could be operated from a hand held controller by the groundsman whilst on the pitch.

The first stage of works by the LS Systems installation team once the existing pitch was removed was to install all new pipework around the perimeter and the infield of the pitch making sure none of the existing under soil heating pipes were disturbed, great care was taken in installing the pipework and fittings so that the pitch contractors were able to work to schedule without any delays.

Once the underground pipework had been installed our design team marked out the position of the sprinklers to be installed, 16 perimeter sprinklers around the edge of the playing surface and 8 long throw sprinklers in the playing area, it was important the accuracy of the sprinklers were correct before the pitch was laid as removing the new turf once it had been laid was not an option.

The system was up and running a couple of days before the turf was due for arrival and any adjustments to pitch levels were completed within the works progress deadlines.

The new system allows the groundsman and his staff to water different areas of the pitch without having to go back to the central controller and saves time because of the systems simplicity, the new system has just had its final ancillary product fitted to the sprinklers in the shape of artificial turf covers to the perimeter sprinklers, this helps the sprinklers blend seamlessly into the surrounding turf.
