Creating flexible urban environments with in-ground power distribution systems

Modern day society and peoples lifestyles demand more of city centre environments every day. The need for ‘now’ and ‘convenience’ mean urban areas within towns and cities must be more flexible than ever.

As online shopping grows the high street has suffered, but city centres are fighting back. ‘In town’ socialising increases with markets becoming trendy again and street-side retail is popping up everywhere. These trends place different demands on street infrastructures; people and vendors want better lighting with secure power to ensure the city centre experience is safe and enjoyable.

Local councils and designers are rebuilding with these new demands in mind. Urban regeneration schemes must support trendy markets, mobile vendors, concerts and events. All of these spaces require power, but not all of the time. This is where the Westminster In-ground power distribution system excels in helping to provide flexible urban spaces. Hidden out of the way when not required, but easily accessible when it is.

The Westminster In-Ground Power Distribution system from Lucy Zodion does exactly that. Installed below ground they form part of the ground surface, completely unnoticed with the same material surface as its surrounding. When power is required they can be unlocked and pulled upright giving access to safe and secure electrical power connections, as well as, water and data – ideal for markets and events where other utilities may be required.

The Westminster units have a standard footprint so are easy for designers to incorporate into their designs. The standard Westminster range offers between two and five electrical outlets, with outlet ratings ranging from 16A - 63A, in a range of configurations suitable for all applications. Single and three-phase versions are available and product ‘specials’ can be engineered for those quirky applications.

The Westminster unit is incredibly robust and able to withstand heavy vehicle loads, making it ideal for walkways, market areas, car parks, stations, yards etc. There is a range of IP options and positive drainage is a key feature supplied as standard, ensuring the units are not susceptible to flooding in areas where the water table is high; meaning security of supply is maintained all year round.

When power is not required, simply lower the units back into the ground and lock safely in place until next time you need them. Westminster In-Ground Power Distribution units from Lucy Zodion – helping create flexible urban environments.
