Sustainable Barriers

It seems strange to say the landscaping industry is getting greener, but that is very much the case. While the industry can be seen to be all about open spaces and sustainability, it is really only in the last few years that landscape designers have been presented with technologies and solutions which allow then to think of sustainability in everything they do.

When it comes to barriers, there are some fantastic systems which deliver sustainability and aesthetics way beyond what can be delivered by traditional fences or walls.

Green Screens are finding an incredibly broad range of uses in both public and private sectors, commercial and domestic. Quick-and-easy to install, Green Screens feature a wire frame upon which vegetation, usually ivy, is cultivated. The Screens continue to grow and become more verdant, requiring minimal maintenance. The Screen dimensions stay within those set down in boundary regulations and the Screens can be used as either stand-alone boundaries, or can be installed next to already existing walls – a common use for local authorities plagued by graffiti. They are also used around schools and other educational establishments to provide attractive, secure and sustainable barriers.

There are also sustainable living boundary systems which offer noise reduction benefits. Featuring a galvanized steel frame around a pressed mineral wool core, NoiSTOP delivers a reduction of up to 70% in the experienced noise behind the screens. The screens can be mounted on top of each other and rapid installation up to a height of 270cm is possible without the need for lifting equipment. NoiSTOP screens are suitable for use with Green Screens or climbing plants to deliver a better aesthetic and additional environmental benefits, and are perfect for sensitive sites such as schools, hospitals or residential areas next to noisy transport links.
